Kennebec KOA Journey- Kennecec, South Dakota

 Campground ***

This, like most KOA "Journey's", is a fine campground for an overnight stay.  The site was level gravel, with nice grass between sites.  Comfortably wide, and long enough we did not have to disconnect the car.

Site #214
$48.12/night
Length of stay - 1 night

Rock creek recreation area COE - Ozawkie, Kansas

 Campground **

This park is miles away from any shopping.  Seventeen miles away from Topeka, but there are a lot of back roads before getting to a highway.

We came to this park a day earlier than originally planned, for an eye doctor appt that Elwood had, in Overland Park (South of Kansas City).  Since it was an hour away from the campground, we parked the coach at a nearby Bass Pro Shops while we went to the appt, then came to the campground.

Our gravel site was not quite level, and raised about a foot higher than the yard area.  We were on an end site, with a large grassy area in front of and behind our site.  But, it was sloped quite a bit, and had a couple of washed out gullies.

The BIG thing that was bad about this campground is the HUGE Midge Gnat population!!!  It was torture taking the dogs out after dark the first night!  We put up our citronella torches, which helped, but they were still very bad.  They swarmed inside when we opened the door.  I had to change the gnat trap sticky pad every morning because it was so covered with them!  And, they stayed on the end of the slide next to the door, even during the day, and flew in.

Cottonwoods RV Park - Columbia, Missouri

 Campground ****

We were able to get a reservation the day of our arrival at Cottonwoods. Our travel plans had changed at the last minute, and we were scrambling to find a spot for an overnight stop. We were placed in site 83, which was the site on the front row next to the office complex. It was much longer than our coach and toad, and we did not have to unhook. It was also very level. Our site had a large grassy area between us and the office, with a nice concrete patio, attractive landscaping, and full hook ups. The park has wifi, which we did not use. We weren't able to use our rooftop satellite dish because it was blocked by trees, but those trees did provide plenty of shade. The roads were easily navigable, but we had to be very careful pulling into the site because of the large boulders on either side of the gravel pad.

Gun Creek Campground COE - Whittington, Illinois

 Campground ***-

This is a nice campground, but there were  several negatives about our site, and the mosquito gnats were VERY troublesome!  The first night we were there, they swarmed us when we took the dogs outside after dark, and flooded inside when we opened the door.  We bought some citrinella torches, which helped, but still a problem.

Our site had very little space on our patio side, between us and our neighbor.  The picnic table was in an area behind the site, instead of next to it.

The tree on our awning side had a parasite that produced large balls on the stems, which fell onto the ground.  There were a LOT of Daddy Long Leg spiders, that were drawn to Elwood's playpen for some reason.

On the positive side, we did get all 3 satellites with the portable dish, and it was a FHU site, which is very rare for COE parks.

Stayed 8 nights

Fort Massac State Park - Metropolis, Illinois

 Campsite **

If we had only spent a few nights here, the rating would have been more like a 4+ or 5.  It is a nice campground, with large sites, with level asphalt parking pads, and area to park your car.  Good grassy area between sites.  Good shade, but we were able to get good satellite reception with the portable satellite.  We were surprised at how few sites were occupied, even on the weekend.  There was only about 6 sites occupied most of the time we were there.

But, after being there 4 nights, the breaker on our pedestal started tripping, with only 2 AC's on and one other item (hair dryer, dishwasher, etc.).  The camp host came over and replaced our breaker.  All was good until the next afternoon.  We lost power again, but discovered it was a problem with a power outage that effected about 1/2 of the campground.  We were the only ones in the campground using 50 amp.  The camp host reset the main breaker.  But, we lost power about 6 times that afternoon and evening.  We decided to leave the next day, a day early.

This is a nice campground, with long, very wide, sites with very wide, level concrete parking pads/patios.  Nice grass between sites.  Wooded, with nice shade.

Our site was across the street from the river.  It was fun to watch the barges and large boats going up the river.

Campground ****

This is a nice campground, with long, level gravel sites, concrete patio with picnic table.  The sites are comfortably wide, with nice grass between sites.

The only bad thing about this park is that there it is out in the middle of nowhere.  Not much around.
